Profile

Brief History and Introduction:
Nalbari College was established in 4th July, 1945 in the pre-independence era with the Arts Stream and was affiliated to Calcutta University until the establishment of Gauhati University in 1948. After 13 years of its establishment and considering the rising demand of the locality, the Science Stream was introduced in 1958 with I.Sc. (Intermediate Science) courses under Gauhati University. The Department of Physics was also started in the same year with Prof. Prabhat Chandra Sarma as the founder Head of the Department and in 1962, the under graduate classes in science stream was introduced. From 1967, the department started offering Honors in Physics under Gauhati University. Starting only with six students enrolled in Major Program, the department presently has an enrollment capacity of 30 students in Major Program and 110 students in General Program and a total student strength of 71 in Major Program and 260 in General Program.
Vision, Mission and Goals:
Our vision is to provide high quality university level education in the field of pure physics and equip the students to gain scientific knowledge and practical skills for higher studies in national higher educational institutions and in the other areas of education and scientific research in physical science.
Our mission is to provide knowledge in various fields of physics and to prepare graduates with high degrees of efficiency and competence to face the present day challenges.
Our goals are:
• To provide high quality education in physical science in undergraduate level and to equip the students for higher education in diverse areas of physics.
• To provide students with state of the art knowledge in Physics to equip themselves to compete globally.
• Provide students with the appropriate education and skills to contribute for the betterment of society through knowledge in Physics.
• Prepare graduate to be qualified and trained to meet the real time needs of the society.
• To create such infrastructure in the department for meeting the above mission.
Programs Offered:
Presently the Department of Physics, Nalbari College is offering B.Sc. with Physics Major and B.Sc. General program under Gauhati University in the under graduate level. Besides this the college is also providing two year Higher Secondary courses under AHSEC.
Infrastructure:
The department of Physics has no separate building of its own. It is housed in the old campus of the college with an approximate build-up area of 925 sq. m. with three separate class room for major classes and six laboratories for the practical classes. Though housed in old buildings, the laboratories are well equipped with all the instruments and equipments required as per the syllabus of the affiliating university. The major program classes are arranged in the three separate rooms adjacent to the Departmental Teachers’ Common Room so that the students are under continuous monitoring and vigil. Classes of general programs are held in different class rooms of the college campus which are common to all science departments. The teacher of the department enjoys the facility of a Departmental Common Room to collectively or individually discharge their normal academic duties or activities.
Being a subject of pure science with lot more theories and derivation practice the faculties of the department mostly uses traditional “Chalk and Board” method of teaching. LCD Projector facility available in the department is used by faculties in some part of the courses in Semester VI classes only. Students also use this facility for their project presentation.
Departmental Library:
The department of Physics has managed one departmental library named as C.V. Raman Seminar Library. The membership of this library is mostly limited the major students and teachers of the department. Each major student can lend two books at a time for a period of seven days (on special request the can keep these book for longer periods). There is no bar for departmental teachers. Some important books for major course are procured through central library and some are procured from teachers and alumnus contribution. Specimen copies, provided by various publishing houses are also included in the departmental library. At present there are 414 books in the departmental library which are in regular periodic use by the students of the department..
The library is managed and maintained by a Teacher-in-Charge with the help of two student members from among the 3rd /4th and 5th /6th semester students under the chairmanship of HoD.
