CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT

Profile

Nalbari College, located in Nalbari, the district headquarter of Nalbari district, Assam was founded in the year 1945.The department of chemistry was established with the introduction of science stream in the year 1958. In its early years, the department started with a limited number of faculty members and offered basic chemistry courses as part of the general science curriculum. Prof J. S. Negi rendered his service as the founder HOD of the department. To cater to the growing demand for chemistry education in the region, the Major course was introduced in the year 1971.Since then, the department is actively involved in imparting chemistry education by adapting to programs that reflect the evolving landscape of chemical research and education, encompassing diverse sub-disciplines such as organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. The department is focussed on developing highly motivated, skilled and passionate human resources, who are efficient and competent to face future challenges.
The department offers honours and general course under Gauhati University at undergraduate level and presently has 76 students enrolled in honours course & 260 students enrolled in general course. Teaching is also imparted to the two year higher secondary course under Assam Higher Secondary Education council (AHSEC). The department boasts of six faculty members all of whom has expertise in diverse research areas such as theoretical chemistry, solid state chemistry, catalysis, organic synthesis, green chemistry etc. The persistent efforts of the faculties has generated rich dividends that is evident in the results of the students. The department is very proud of its students to have achieved various academic accolades. Some of these are mentioned below:
 Students have continuously cleared the national level “Joint Admission Test for Masters” (JAM) exam every year.
 Students have also cleared the national level “Common University Entrance Test” (CUET) exam since its inception in the year 2022 and have gone on to take admissions in various central universities and national institutions of repute.
 In the recent undergraduate examination, Mr Masas Pratim Sharma topped the final examination securing 1st class 1st position. He was also adjusted the Best Graduate among all the science streams under Gauhati University.
 The department has very healthy ratio of students who have pursued their masters degree after completing their graduation from Nalbari College. A good number of them have further cleared NET/GATE/SLET examinations and opted for PhD programmes.
 Students have also excelled in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Their participationin various college activities and subsequent recognitions in diverse platforms are well documented.
The department of chemistry is also working towards upliftment of the socio-economic conditions in the neighbouring areas. The 6th semester students, in their research project work, which falls under the university syllabus mandate, has been analysing and monitoring the overground and underground water quality level in specific target areas. This has helped in creating a database of possible water borne hazards such as Arsenic poisoning and also sensitising local communities. The work is being continued for further in-depth study.
Various programmes are routinely conducted for overall enrichment of the students, some of which are mentioned below:
 A “Chemical Society Lecture Series” is organised twice every year under the aegis of Chemical Society, Department of Chemistry, Nalbari College. Prominent researchers, academicians and skilled individuals from other backgrounds are invited to share their knowledge with the honours students.
 Outreach/On-site tours are organized to various higher academic institutes/analytical agencies/industries for honours students to enable them to observe & learn hands-on techniques.
 Various aptitude checking tests such as Chemistry Olympiad, CONTECH test are organised.
The department is coordinating with Association of Chemistry Teachers’ (ACT), Mumbai in organising events such as Global Women’s Breakfast. It is also in process to develop formal tie-ups with neighbouring higher educational institutes through MoUs. A departmental library consisting of around 500 books is maintained at the department. Students are encouraged to use the library services.
The department envisions to inspire the next generation of students by showcasing the excitement and real-world applications of chemistry. By breaking down barriers and demystifying the subject, we wish to contribute towards building a more scientifically informed and curious society.
